Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon aluminum-free baking powder
  • 1 ¾ cups buttermilk up to 2 cups if batter is too dry
  • 2 cups diced ham
  • 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup 1 stick salted butter

Method

  1. Preheat the Oven
  2. Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C). Lightly grease a 9×9-inch glass or ceramic baking dish.
  3. Mix Dry Ingredients
  4. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and baking powder until well combined.
  5. Add Buttermilk
  6. Slowly add in the buttermilk and stir until a thick, sticky dough forms. If the mixture is too dry, add a little more buttermilk.
  7. Fold in Ham and Cheese
  8. Gently stir in the diced ham and shredded cheddar until evenly mixed throughout the dough.
  9. Melt Butter and Prepare Pan
  10. Melt the butter in a microwave-safe bowl, then pour it into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  11. Add Biscuit Dough
  12. Spoon the dough into the butter-filled dish and gently spread it out evenly. It’s okay if some of the butter rises to the top.
  13. Score the Dough
  14. Using a knife, score the top of the dough into 9 equal squares to make it easier to separate after baking.
  15. Bake
  16. Place the baking dish on the center rack of the oven and bake for 25–30 minutes. Rotate halfway through baking for even browning. If the tops are browning too quickly, tent with foil.
  17. Serve
  18. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly. Slice along the score marks and serve warm for the best experience.
